Responsibility: B2B, UX designer
Duration: June – Dec 2022
Tool: Figma, Miro, Adobe Illustrator, Jira
Team: Waters Digital Product Design Team
Waters Corporation is best known for its liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry systems, which are used to analyze and identify the chemical composition of a wide range of substances. During my internship, the product I mainly focuses on is called Waters_connect. Waters_connect is an informatics platform that helps analytical laboratories, their scientists, and extended teams to explore, discover, and push the boundaries of how laboratories use information, producing faster, and richer scientific and business outcomes.
During this intern, I got the chance to try a lot of different stuff: I did a UX design ops research, redesigned the onboarding experience for Waters' current product, design the current team logo, also participated in improving the current UX design system. The features I worked on are under NDA which means I cannot talk about the design here. If you're a hiring manager or a recruiter, you should find the password to this page on my resume.
However, I will share my experiences, challenge and learnings. Here are my contributions:
Communication is an art, in interviews, in teamworks, etc.:
I did dozens of interviews during this internship, I gradually learnt to tweak my interview protocol a bit for different types of interviewees, which makes them feel comfortable and more willing to share their thoughts and experiences. Also, this can lead to more in-depth and valuable insights, as my interviewees are more likely to open up and share personal information when they feel they are being listened to.
In design, every pixel matters:
During this internship, I kept making tiny modification on my design, but I enjoy every moment of it since I can truly feel the difference at first glance and in user testings. Small changes in pixel placement can result in a difference between a design that looks polished and professional and one that appears amateurish. Precision in design is important for creating clear, cohesive and aesthetically pleasing visuals.
Research is a never ending process, but its deliverable is more important:
The constantly evolving technology and the dynamic nature of the market requires organizations to continuously gather user feedback and insights to improve their products and services. On the other hand, the deliverables of UX research are important because they provide organizations with valuable insights into their target audience and help them to make informed design decisions that ultimately lead to a better user experience. By conducting UX research, organizations can identify user pain points, preferences, and behaviors, and use that information to create products and services that meet their needs more effectively.
Due to NDA restrictions, I cannot share any progress or visuals for the project, Please find the password on my resume if you’re a hiring manager or recruiter. but feel free to contact me: xx19@iu, if you want to learn more or walk through the case study.
